MOMENTS IN TIME
On October 14th, 1979, the first national march on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights took place. This was 16 years after Black Americans marched in Washington, D.C., to protest discrimination. About 75,000—both LGBTQ+ and straight allies—marched for a ban on discrimination in the federal government based on sexual orientation and a repeal of anti-homosexual laws nationwide. Many were also protesting Ronald Reagan, a conservative who was running for President, and mourning Harvey Milk, the first out gay man elected to public office in California, who was assassinated in 1978.
TRAILBLAZER

The state had an onslaught of legislation that would negatively impact her community. Her journey was recorded in the Emmy winning documentary, Trans in America: Texas Strong. She has also co-authored a book in 2023, Joy to the World, about Joy, a twelve-year-old trans girl, who just moved to Texas with her mother and older brother. Her family has accepted Joy as the girl she is early in her transition, with little fuss, leaving Joy to explore her love of sports, competition, teamwork, school spirit.
