What’s Happening
■ June 12th is Loving Day. It’s an annual celebration of the landmark 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which struck down all remaining anti-miscegenation laws banning interracial marriage that remained in 16 U.S. states at the time.
■ June 20th is World Refugee Day, as designated internationally by The United Nations, to honor refugees around the globe.
■ June 27th is National PTSD Awareness Day - recognizing the effects post-traumatic stress has on the lives of those impacted by it. Some ways to observe this day include: Standing with PTSD Survivors, learning more about it, talking about PTSD to spread awareness, and wearing a teal ribbon.
Let's Recognize
■ Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th throughout the United States. The name is derived from combining “June” and “nineteenth,” and is celebrated to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States on June 19, 1865, following the announcement of General Order No. 3 which proclaimed freedom from slavery in Texas. It became a federal holiday in 2021.
■ Caribbean-American Heritage Month was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005 to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States.
■ June marks the 53rd celebration of Pride Month - when millions of people come together in support of the LGBTQIA+ community. This year’s themes are: “Strength in Solidarity” and “All Out with Pride” in New York and Los Angeles, respectively.
■ National Immigrant Heritage Month - celebrated in June and established in 2014 -reminds all to explore our own immigrant heritage and celebrate the diversity that comes from being a nation of immigrants.
