■ Nelson Mandela International Day, celebrated on July 18th each year since 2010, honors Nelson Mandela's legacy and deep commitment to justice, human rights and the fundamental freedoms of every human. It is regarded as a global call to action, honoring the idea that each individual has the power to bring a change and make an impact. This year’s theme is “The Legacy Lives on Through You: Climate, Food and Solidarity.”
■ Disability is a part of the rich tapestry of human diversity and can also be a significant identity that defines how we experience the world. Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July - in honor of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act - to recognize the history, achievements, experiences, and challenges of the disability community. All disabilities and their intersecting identities should be acknowledged, valued, and respected.
■ On July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned employers from discriminating based on race, religion, color, national origin or sex, and outlawed segregation in public places and schools. It was a historical achievement of the Civil Rights Movement.
■ Purple Heart Day is observed on August 7th each year and is a time for Americans to remember and honor the brave men and women who were either wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.
■ August 9th is International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. We are encouraged to raise awareness of the needs of indigenous groups and spread the United Nation’s message of the protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous people. This year’s United Nations theme is “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.”
■ Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26th to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
A reminder that every Katz Media employee has one Spirit Day-an 8-hour day that can be used for volunteer work at a charity or non-profit organization. Search "Disability Pride Events" in any browser for ways you can use your Spirit Day this July in support of Disability Pride Month.
