MOMENT IN TIME

Día de la Raza, or “Day of the Races” is celebrated in many Latin American countries on October 12th. It acknowledges the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas but is also meant to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage and history of Latin America, combining elements of Indigenous, African, and European cultures. It is a multifaceted celebration that honors the past, recognizes the present, and looks forward to a more inclusive and respectful future.

 

TRAILBLAZER

Mexican beauty vlogger Mariand Castrejon Castaneda, popularly known as Yuya, is one of the Top Latin Influencers of 2024. Yuya began her career shortly after winning a makeup contest on YouTube at age 16. Her eponymous channel, which she originally named “lady16makeup”, has now over 24.3 million followers worldwide. She was one of seven female YouTubers who joined the United Nations‘ Sustainable Development Action Campaign, to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Yuya has her own makeup line in several Latin American countries and has a star on the Las Vegas Star Walk for promoting peace through her videos.

With the steady growth of the Hispanic population in the U.S., their purchasing power has also grown substantially over the years. Based on the data provided by the Selig Center for Economic Growth,  the Hispanic buying power increased significantly over the last 30 years, from $213 billion in 1990 to $1.9 trillion in 2020. This accounted for 11.1% of U.S. buying power in 2020. By 2025, it will account for 12% of all U.S. buying power. 

 

FOR A CAUSE

Think Bilingual is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes bilingualism, bilingual education, and multiculturalism by providing free access to information, local resources, and programs.

Language learning and native languages are supported by Think Bilingual. They advocate for more bilingual/biliteracy and multicultural programs through advocacy and outreach. Through language and cultural learning and exchange, the organization hopes to bring together people from all walks of life.

Think Bilingual compiles research-based data to guide initiatives aimed at providing support, advocating for change, bridging communities, and educating people.
